BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY TESLA DRIVE
This event is open to ALL Tesla owners, from anywhere! You do not need to be in a club or from NC to participate. We currently have registrants from NC, SC, GA, FL, VA, TN, MA, TX, and IL!
2019 Registration is Open
We now have our permit and have opened registration for the 2019 Blue Ridge Parkway Tesla Drive. Due to extensive construction work planned on the parkway south of Boone, we've worked with the National Park Service to make some changes to the original plan, but we think you'll like them. This year's route will originate and end in Asheville and will not encounter any construction zones. The registration link is below but please take a moment to read the rest of the info on this page before registering.
Stats as of July 14, 2019
Participants will gather in the large parking lot at the Asheville Supercharger beginning in the morning. We have permission from property owners and will work with them to make this a full event of its own. Registration will occur in the parking lot and we are looking into options including food trucks to expand the lunch options. There are a number of food options already within walking distance of the supercharger.
Before the drive begins we will also be collecting non-perishable food for a Fill-up-the-Frunk drive, which was suggested and organized by a member of Pittsburgh Tesla Owners. Loving Food Resources helps 18 counties in Western North Carolina and will be on hand to collect the donations. 8,308 clients received food boxes last year from LFR. Below is a list of most needed items, but any non glass, non perishable items are appreciated. Cereal, canned meats: chicken, tuna etc, cooking oils, hearty & chunky soups, canned beans & fruit, quick & easy meal kits, pastas.
Additional details about "The Gathering" will be posted as they are finalized.
The drive will originate at the Asheville Supercharger and take us southwest down the Blue Ridge Parkway. We will travel 78 miles on the parkway through hairpin curves, steep grades, and many tunnels, climbing to an altitude above 6000 feet at one point. After reaching the end of the parkway, the direct trip back to the supercharger is 52 miles, making the entire loop 130 miles. All Teslas should be able to make this drive. After exiting the Blue Ridge Parkway at the 78 mile mark, the permitted drive is complete and you may return directly to Asheville or choose your own adventure before returning. Many will return directly but for those with additional battery capacity that you're itching to fully utilize, there will be options to do so. Some small groups may be organized for a little additional driving before returning and of course you may break out on your own.
The 130 mile loop
Saturday night will be a group social and dinner event in the ballroom of the Asheville Crowne Plaza. To attend the evening event, there is a $45 per person charge to cover the event space, dinner buffet, service fees, and taxes. Children 10 to 4 are $22 and children 3 and under are free. Participation in the evening event is optional but we hope to see many of you there. Tickets to the evening event may be reserved during registration. Payment for tickets is not required until September 1st and once paid, tickets are refundable until 1 week before the event. Details are in the registration link.
Details of the buffet will be posted when finalized. It will include salad, bread, two entrees to be determined, a side, and dessert. There will also be a cash bar to purchase alcoholic beverages. For those staying in Asheville, we highly recommend booking your hotel stay soon. While there are lots of hotel options in Asheville, they tend to fill up over weekends heading into and through Autumn.
While the official 2019 Blue Ridge Parkway Tesla Drive event ends when the ballroom doors close Saturday night, that doesn't mean the adventure has to end. For those that want to, you're welcome to setup small group options among yourselves for Sunday. The Facebook group below would be a good place for discussion and organization of Sunday small group options. Any additional organized driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway would need to be limited to groups of 20 cars or less to be in compliance with use of the parkway without a permit.
Small group options are not organized or hosted by Tesla Owners Club of NC Triangle, Inc.
With the drive originating from the Asheville supercharger and returning back to Asheville, charging should not be an issue if managed correctly. We will have additional information as we get a better idea of how many cars are coming and when people will arrive.
General rule is to charge up as soon as you get to Asheville to allow space for those arriving after you. For those coming in Friday, be sure to charge up to 90% Friday night at the Asheville Supercharger. For those coming in Saturday, we will be suggesting charging strategy to ensure all cars have enough charge to make the loop. After the drive, we will suggest that anyone staying in Asheville Saturday night delay charging to give priority to those traveling home Saturday. You will make your own decisions when it comes to use of the supercharger. We can only make suggestions.
